Analysing a given extract is a skill we have been learning in class and has helped me understand film language and puts me in a strong position when I come to create my own production. the extract is a clim from primeval and look at representation of gender.
At the start of the extract it shows the female character in distress. which can show vulnerability in the character and a stereotypical representation of a female character of being the emotional or more attached in specific circumstances. the male character response in a way that we expect. he does not seem disheartened or fazed by the females reaction to the situation and simply walks away from the obviously upset female character. and this shows a ‘typical’ male reaction of not seeming to care and to leave them be.
In the next scene we see Abbie operating a large excavator which would normally be used by a male. her facial expression stays calm and collected which shows that she feels in control and knows very well what she is doing. The heavy machinery does not bother her which is the opposite to what we would expect for a female character to react. As this job of using this vehicle would normally be given to a male character. to further switch on the gender role her clothing is very dark and very masculine further giving us the impression of her status in the scene.
